Resident led ideas.
Community driven change.
In 2018, residents from Lewiston’s Tree Streets Neighborhood were asked about their vision for the future of their neighborhood.
Residents talked about their hopes, their dreams, and their fears for the neighborhood they call home.
Over 400 people speaking 8 different languages took part. Residents, business owners, community organizations, elected officials, advocates, property owners, investors, foundations, local people experiencing homelessness, youth, and City staff worked together to create a 25-year shared vision to transform the neighborhood.
Their vision was documented in the Growing Our Tree Streets Transformation Plan.
The Transformation Plan, which was officially adopted by the City of Lewiston in 2020, helps guide the work happening in the Tree Streets Neighborhood today. Its relevance has only increased. The plan’s call for more housing Lewiston people can afford has grown. The data collected on where we need safer sidewalks and more lighting for pedestrians to walk helps guide city planning. The need for education, youth programming, job training and career building support continues. The need for safer neighborhoods persists. And the need for changing the Tree Streets’ narrative remains. As one resident noted: “We’re bad at telling our own good story.”
Part of our work is to change how we tell our good story as our work addressing these challenges continues. Our collective commitment to the Transformation Plan remains. This is Lewiston helps us connect those dots.
